George Daniels – A Master Watchmaker & His Art

Widely regarded as the definitive book on George Daniels life and work, this biography has been written by Michael Clerizo, who is both the author of ‘Masters of Contemporary Watchmaking’ and a highly respected writer for the Wall Street Journal. A long term admirer of the work of Dr George Daniels, he decided to devote a book to the great man and his works.

Books published by George Daniels

George Daniels has published a number of books during his long career, the first being “Watches” written in collaboration with Cecil Clutton and published in 1965. Since then there have been another six books, some of which have been translated and published in French, Italian and German. Watchmaking, now in its Third Edition, was revised and reprinted in 1999 and followed a year later by All in Good Time – Reflections of a Watchmaker. Currently four books are still in print and available for order.

Watchmaking

No complete textbook has previously been written and one of the most interesting aspects of George Daniels’ work, which this book describes, is that he makes every component of the watch himself. The making of the precision timekeeper is described, step-by-step, and is illustrated at each stage with line drawings and brief explanatory captions.

All In Good Time – Reflections Of A Watchmaker (New Revised Edition – 2012)

The remarkable story of George Daniels, the master mechanic, who was born into poverty but raised himself to become the foremost watchmaker of the 20th Century. This autobiography will amaze, fascinate and inspire in equal measure. Most of all you will witness the triumph of intelligence, ingenuity, matchless skill and singularity of purpose over the most unpromising of beginnings.

The Practical Watch Escapement was written especially for the modern generation of aspiring watch makers who, in an electronic age, have acquired no instruction in the workings and essential features of the mechanical escapement from the ancient verge through to the co-axial escapement, and its application in the modern watch.
